Our History

It all began in October 1956, when three Christian couples, Douglas and Norma Connell, Calvin and Thelma Morrison & Gerald and Daisy Somers began a small prayer meeting in the basement of Calvin Morrison’s home at 255 Frances Street. They pleaded with God to raise up a place where fundamental Christianity might flourish.  After much prayer, God answered, and raised up Calvary Sunday School, which also took place in Calvin’s basement. The first Sunday, just 15 people were present, including teachers. That Fall, the little group of Christians called on Rev. Robert Wilson as Pastor. He promptly changed the name to Calvary Baptist Church,  helped the church to elect its first deacons, who were the founding male members, the  trustees, who were:  Delbert Connors and George Sutherland, and draft a constitution. Souls were being saved, baptized and added to membership, and in 1959, the growing church relocated to the former Royal Canadian Legion on King George Highway.

After two years, the people were in a position to begin construction on a piece of property purchased from Agnes Delano. On January 21, 1962, the people moved into a 35’x63′ building at 203 Delano Avenue. Within the next six years, the church would become incorporated, a two-story parsonage would be built for $12,000 and the church’s mortgage would be paid in full. By 1979, it became apparent that Calvary Baptist Church would need to expand once again; and so, in 1980, the church went through a $40,000 expansion project. Today, you will find this unassuming white building still quietly resides at 203 Delano Avenue, behind the Miramichi Civic Center.
